AARTH (Action, Advocacy, Research and Training in Disability) is an initiative of ASTHA and has grown out of our understanding of the issues that are arising in the field of disability that is evolving and changing at a fast pace on the country level and at the global level. The work we do has been a mandate of and is a part of the ongoing initiatives at ASTHA. But the time has come to consolidate and develop the work at a different level for a wider reach. |

AARTH – (Astha disability helpline and resource centre)
Seven years old and growing…
We Believe every question is important …
AARTH [ Action, Advocacy, Research and Training in Disability ] is an initiative of ASTHA. Our work in the field of disability over the last fourteen years has been recognised for its quality.
AARTH is an information and resource provider for children and persons with disability, their families, communities and other stakeholders. It promotes a rights-based approach by advocating for disability-related issues and how they are linked to other developmental issues.
An integral part of AARTH - ASTHA's mandate has been to look at and research into issues that arise from our work with children and persons with disabilities. All our research initiatives pointed to the lack of information at the core of all issues. And for persons with disabilities and their families, the need for information is vital at all stages.
Information is a crucial link in accessing services and moving towards developing further abilities.
This is where a helpline can step-in and enable people access their rights.
A helpline has the potential to reach-out to people, who perhaps, are unable to access services just because they don't have access to information.
A telephone helpline ensures confidentiality to the callers and enables them to access information without stepping out of the house.
With this perspective in mind, we started a disability helpline and a walk-in counselling facility in October 2000.
The AARTH – ASTHA disability helpline and resource team has constantly reached out to organisations, and through them to communities and families living in difficult circumstances, with information and to understand their concerns and perspectives. Reaching out to people, who perhaps would not even be able to access information over the phone, has always been a priority.
It has enabled us to broaden our perspective and understand the links disability has with other developmental issues.
In the last seven years, we have seen the impact it has had and the potential for it to become a very important resource facility. We have been able to touch the lives of over 3000 people, linking them with professionals, services, support groups and most importantly, listen to them. |
